Trick My Truck Challenge!

April 16, 2008 The Chrome Shop Mafia Trick My Truck 8489 W. Third Street Los Angles, California 90048 Re: Crescent City Off-Highway Log Truck Restoration Dear Team, The community of Del Norte County, California has a challenge for you. For over a century, our community worked the forests of Northern California building lives, families and industries all on solid traditions of hard work and making a living from the land. Del Norte County is home to some of the largest trees in the world and, for over a century, we moved them out of the forest starting with oxen, then steam engine and eventually the largest off highway trucks money could buy. Redwood logs created big people, big communities and big machines - and that is where our community challenge begins. Our community banded together and saved the last remaining off highway log truck from the scrap heap. These monsters were a once common sight in our community and this 1967 Peterbilt Off-Highway log truck is a one of its kind. One of these three axel trucks could carry over 25,000 board feet of timber and 120 tons; massive feats compared to its 5,000 board foot modern day equivalent. Just to get a sense of scale we have a photo attached of the truck we saved with a 17 foot diameter redwood log. This community has worked hard to pick itself up after the decline of the timber and fishing industries and through the efforts of a lot of committed folks we have managed to salvage this last piece of our countys history. After the decline of the timber and fishing industries our community hit rock bottom and it stayed that way for a long time. Del Norte County is often ranked among the worst for social and economic statistics in the state of California, and only now have we started to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and come together as a community to make a better life for ourselves and our children. After three decades it feels good to be back in the game again! But our community still needs hope, and it needs to see that when we work together we can achieve greatness. The Crescent City/Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce would like to challenge the Chrome Shop Mafia to help save our culture, traditions and past. We propose that the Mafia Team come to Crescent City and help trick this old truck to its vintage state and roll this bad boy out on the 4th of July during our largest event of the year when more than 30,000 residents and travelers descend on this little Beachfront Town of Crescent City, in the heart of Del Norte County. Do you want a true human interest story, one that breathes life into an entire community, one that will bring a tear to the eye of thousands of viewers? Then come check us out. There is nothing on your blog that currently compares to this story. We have it all for you right here in this most incredible, picturesque and beautiful corner of California. More importantly, you will truly be making a difference in the lives of the 28,000 people of Del Norte County. Thank you for helping to save this piece for Del Norte County history for a community that truly deserves a pat on the back. Sincerely, Chris Howard Crescent City/Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors
