CHAMBER ADVOCACY ISSUES
Workers Compensation
One of the most pressing concerns for Del Norte County and other California businesses is the out-of-control cost of state’s Workers Compensation System. Over the last three years pure premiums have risen by nearly 50% and some businesses have seen their premiums increase by as much as 200%!
The system, simply put, has gone off the rails. The original intent of the program introduced in the early 1900’s has been lost as California’s compensation laws have been rewritten and reinterpreted so they now can be easily taken advantage of.
The Crescent City/ Del Norte Chamber of Commerce strongly supports efforts by the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to reform the Workers Compensation System.
We have submitted a letter to Governor Schwarzenegger lending our ringing endorsement of his campaign to stop the abuses of the system and bring costs into line.
Click on the link located in the upper right to see the letter the Crescent City/Del Norte Chamber of Commerce sent to the Governor’s office.
If you agree with the position of the Chamber, we urge you to draft a letter of your own and send it to the Governor’s office at your earliest opportunity. The address is as follows:

Send a Letter & Support Our Regional Airport!
To all citizens of Del Norte, Curry and Josephine Counties:
We now have an important opportunity to dramatically improve the commercial airport at Jack McNamara Field in Del Norte County.
Improved air access into and out of area would be a boon to the economies of Del Norte, Curry and Josephine counties and open up new possibilities for tourism and other sectors of the economy. It would also add to the quality of life for all of our residents who now often have to travel as far as Portland and San Francisco to get the full benefits of the international air transportation system
There has been considerable research and planning to identify what airport improvements are our best options for Jack McNamara Field. Projects would include resurfacing the runway, a new terminal and fire station, adding to security fencing, improving landing equipment, runway extension and more.
Currently, airport improvement projects require local communities to raise ten percent of the costs of any projects before they can proceed. This is extremely difficult for a rural area such as ours with all of the economic challenges we are already facing!
It is our hope to receive special funding to allow these airport improvements to proceed.
Congressmen Mike Thompson and United States Senator Barbara Boxer have introduced legislation, H.R. 3697 and S 1960, to “jump start” these necessary airport improvements.
To move this necessary project forward we must get Congress to act by communicating our strong support to make the Jack McNamara Field a truly regional air facility.
A draft of a letter to Congress can be found by clicking on the draft link in the upper right corner. Please add your name and address to the letter, print up a copy, sign it and send it to the following address:
